Friday and Saturday July 2 & 3 2010

We have been enjoying NYC and have been doing a great deal of walking. After our cereal we went to the Starbucks that is just around the corner close to 48th and on 3rd Ave. There WIFI connection wasn't working but we were able to pick up another one foe just a while. Later we headed up to get our MTA cards at the subway stop on 52nd and 3rd. We then we caught the bus to 72nd where we caught the crosstown bus to go to the West Side. We got off on Central Park West and walked over to Amsterdam when we had lunch at Isabells that is on the South side of the Natural History Museum. The weather was in the high 60s so it was perfect for sitting outside to eat. From there we went over to Broadway to go to my favorite grocery store in NYC....not Zabars which is terrific, but Fairways!!! Could have stayed there for hours! We bought some fixing for salad later olives and just gawked at all the wonderful meats, fresh fish and cheeses......looked but no chili mangoes.......so far can't find them anywhere in the city!!!!!! From there we stopped into a Starbucks where Terry was able to check the Stock Market ( and made a good sale enough to pay for the trip here, the tickets for the 4th on the Intrepid plus the dogs and all). We then walked back to Central Park and went to the Boathouse where we had a glass of wine and watched the Soccer game between Ghana and Paraguay.........the place was jambed......and there were several young men obviously from Ghana that were glued to the TV near the main bar. Watching their faces was as nice as watching the game directly. We left there walked out of the park to 5th avenue and then took the bus down to 50th. We walked to St Barts., which is our 'local' Episcopal church, that is on the corner of Park and 50th. We went in and I was able to show Terry its beautiful chapel which he'd never seen. He noticed that there was a Morning Prayer service every Saturday morning at 10:00 that is held in the chapel! So that will be the plan for Saturday. From here we walked up to Hillstones on 53rd and 3rd( the old Houston's in Citicorp) where we watch the rest of the game with Ghana......what an amazing game!!!! It went into overtime for a "kick-off"..........after that we walked back home.......and called it an early night. We were pooped.

Saturday morning found us back at Starbucks where this particular store is still having Internet problems but had coffee before returning to the apartment for showers and then we were off to church.....only three of us plus a young woman as the priest......she was charming. From there we discovered that our crosstown bus the M50 has had it's weekend service canceled ( part of the city cutting services to curb losses in revenue) so.......we walked all the way over to the West side to the Intrepid! It's on the corner of 46th and 12thAve......that is a walk! We got our tickets for the Fireworks and then walked down the West Side Park just south of the carrier and then caught the bus on 42nd street to back to 3rd Ave where we came back up to Hillstones to have lunch.........Terry's burger was one of the best he has every had.......wish I'd had it too instead of my Asian Noodle Salad. At this point his back and feet ( bad shoes) were killing so he went home while I went into Barnes and Nobles which is above Hillstones in Citicorp. I browsed until around 3:30. I hope the Dr Scholls inner soles I bought on the way home will help Terry tomorrow. Watched another soccer game and decided to stay in again. It's peaceful and relaxing. Weather continues to be wonderful but there is supposed to be a six day heat way starting Monday. We will leave then to go back to FL since walking in the city will not be much fun......will be back in September if not sooner.

  1. Great Post!!! So enjoyed reading about your time in the city...but...my feet were beginning to hurt by the end of the blog..wow..you must have walked off everything you'd eaten. I so envy you & Martha's ability to walk so much..I use to do that but don't have the feet for it any more. That must have been some special good deal on Terry's Stock Sale..Good timing to catch it when he did. Isn't it fun to share your visit with other people.. hugs, Mary
